The RPG Basement – The Beginning

My spouse is an avid RPG player and Dungeon Master/ Game Master, so it won’t surprise anyone that his dream “man cave” is a space to fully embrace the fantasy gaming world. When we looked for our current house, he wanted to make sure to have plenty of room to game with his friends on occasion. – On occasion is relative as he would play every night if possible. And voila we have a finished basement for him to disappear into. The initial goal was to add a large table and some shelves and call it a day, but that didn’t sit well with me, as I saw the opportunity for a full room craft extravaganza.  - Have I committed to more than I could ever achieve? Yeah, probably!

Starting to think about this, I looked at a lot of online ideas but didn’t love any one way of approaching this especially with a tight budget, so I figured I'll just wing it … what could go wrong? Based on any of my previous crafting experiences, the answer is “a lot can and will go wrong” so I figured why not take others on this adventure with me.

Hopefully, there are some things I will do you can get inspiration from, while I bet that there will be a lot of things you will be able to “know better than me and not make those same mistakes”. As mentioned I have no clue what I am actually doing, so stay tuned on my progress/ lack thereof and feel free to give me pointers as I go, if you and everyone can tell that I am making grave mistakes or simply could be doing some things smarter.

Here is our space in its raw form. - And yes, I found an old table on craigslist a while back and couldn’t help myself, so now it's in the way of everything we do … great start!

Looking at the empty space, I threw around many ideas to say it politely. These are my final sketches. - Trust me there were many more!

-They are shitty at best-

Will it look anything like them in the end? – Probably not! (Actually, as I am writing this, I know for a fact that it won’t as I got carried away at the hardware store). If nothing else, they helped communicate a general vision to my husband, who for a very imaginative DM/GM has a surprisingly low spatial imagination capacity, even though he may say that this is due to my lack of communicating my ideas correctly. My official excuse for this is, that I am not native to the English language, but honestly, it’s probably more the case that I am not even sure yet what to do!

Follow me along on this journey and make sure to chime in on any ideas etc..
